4 year old mini dachshund- weight loss diet help?

i have a four year old wiener dog, hes a little over weight. I was wondering if anyone could give some doggie weight loss advice. He's only a few pounds over weight, nothing crazy but im still concerned because the breed has such fragile backs. We havent really been measuring out his food each day but started giving him a cup of Purina ONE Healthy weight. We take him for walks or short runs almost everyday. Instead of giving him dog treats, i give him carrots and he loves them.

One thing I learned with this breed, they never stop eating, they continue to eat as long as you keep feeding them. I swear they don't get the feeling of being full.

Any advice as to what to feed him? The best dog food to feed him? Should I give him a 1/2 cup of the food instead of a whole cup? Should I split it up, 1/2 morning & 1/2 afternoon/evening? Should I add some raw veggies to his food to make him feel like he ate more?

I wanted to start him on Eukanuba specifically for Dachshunds, but I read a few reveiws that it doesnt help with weight loss, so i want to get him down to a healthy weight before I start him on that.

And yes I know I should consult with my vet, and I plan to when in 2-3 months when I take him in.
Actually i dont plan to put him on that eukanuba crap & screw purina too. lol

i think i'm going to put him on more natural food like Blue buffalo for small breeds or Nutro Ultra weight management.

Are those good? Anyone have any experience with those brands? Or are there any other natural dog foods like that that you recommend?

  1. First, Eukanuba is a crap food, so that’s not a good option.

You are right to be concerned about your dog’s weight … no dog is healthy if he’s overweight.

What to feed is a matter of research and availability. Pick something with no corn and (ideally) no other grains. HOW to feed is the issue. You simply measure it out to the exact amount EVERY time and feed him a bit less than the recommended amount.

A bit less food plus a longer walk will get the results you want.

  2. •Eat healthy to lose weight. Consider buying raw foods, healthy foods, whole grains and plenty of fruit, vegetables, beans and nuts for the best nutrition.

•Exercise! Get out there and get active. The more you move, the better you will feel, and there are literally thousands of different exercises for you to try
    .
•Drink enough water. Proper hydration is vital because your body performs at its best when you have enough water in your system. Other forms of hydration are also useful, but water is the purest and most natural nutrient that you can put into your body hands down.
That’s it. There is nothing simpler than knowing these three fundamental truths for diets. Follow these three rules of thumb and you will not fail.
